Henry Banta was the first tax assessor-collector for Hunt County, Texas. He was the son of Isaac and Eliza Banta. He moved with his family to Texas in 1840. Born Warwick County, Indiana. Died Greenville, Texas. Later his body was moved to Yantis.

Henry Banta was born in Warwick county, Indiana and migrated with his father Isaac in 1839. At the age of eighteen, he joined the Texas Rangers and served six years. Subsequently he was Deputy Sheriff, Tax Collector and Assessor, also owning a farm. He united with the Baptist Church in May, 1846, and was licensed to preach August 14, 1868. He was ordained October 12, 1870, as pastor of the South Sulphur Springs Church, Texas. Subsequently he was pastor of the church at Carroll's Prairie. He was married to Susan Winniford.
