One Hundred Years in Bandera, page 74 special edition newspaper, On March 15, 1937, there passed away at Medina, one of the outstanding citizens of Bandera County. He was George Wilson Banta, 96 years old, active and alert to the day he died. Born at Clarksville, Texas, January 29, 1841, he was one of thirteen children in the family of Isaac Banta, a pioneer citizen of that section. When the War Between the States came on he enlisted in Company I, 18th Texas Cavalry, and participated in several desperate engagements. He was captured and sent as a prisoner to Camp Douglas, on Lake Michigan, afterwards being exchanged, and went to Richmond, Virginia, to enter General Bragg's army. He was in the battles of Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Chickanauga, and down to Franklin, Tennessee, and was wounded three times. On March 15, 1865, he was married to Miss Susan Rippey, and they moved to Gillespie County, where they resided on the frontier for several years. In 1886 they moved to a location near Medina, where they reared their family of twelve children. Mrs. Banta passed away at the faimly home in Medina March 15, 1930. One of thir sons, Ernest J. Banta, has served as postmaster in Medina City for more than twenty-five years.
