Andrew was the last surviving of 14 children. Born in Ahoghill Co. Antrim then Ireland (now Northern, Ireland) his parents farmed and rented land near the Glebe. Glebe was a term used meaning "Church Land". They raised potatoes and grew flax for the linen cloth production that Ireland is famous for and indigo as it was used to die fabrics. Andrew and Elizabeth were married in 1888. they later immigrated to Glasgow, Scotland where Andrew worked as a Train Porter. Andrew and his family lived on Glebe Street, ironically living near The Glebe in Ahoghill; their flat was not far from the Martyer School,
today a famous building designed by the world-renowned architect and designer Renee MacIntosh. Andrew later worked as a Bobbie / Police Officer. In his police career, he worked as part of a security detail for Queen Victoria on one of her state visits to Glasgow, Scotland. Later in his career, Andrew was severely injured in the line of duty. He retired from police work and later immigrated to the USA where his sister Sarah (Blair) Thompson had settled near Monmouth, Illinois. After several years working in Illinois, Andrew and his family moved to central Iowa. Andrew worked in the Des Moines area at a local creamery. Andrew and Eliza are buried in Madison Co. Iowa as to be near their son Earnest who died at a young age in the Spanish Flew Epidemic.
