Mr. Kautz, 83, of Oronoco, died Monday (March 24, 2008) at the Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island.
Gaylord Earl Kautz was born May 18, 1924, in Milton Township, Dodge County. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He farmed with his father until entering the Army in December 1944. During World War II he served in Okinawa, and while home on leave married Doris M. Markham on Jan. 19, 1946, in Rochester. Following his honorable discharge in January 1947, he and his wife settled in the Pine Island area. They moved to Oronoco in 1959.
Mr. Kautz farmed and did construction work for many years. He sold seed corn for more than 25 years, and for the last 19 years had sold Christmas trees. He was a member of Charles Cowden American Legion Post 184 for 40 years, and was also a member of Swanson-Owens VFW Post 9647. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing cards, mowing his yard and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mary (Ronald) Fuller of Oronoco; three sons, Gary (Sandra) of Oronoco, Larry (Bev) of Pine Island and Barry (Deb) of Zumbro Falls; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Daryl of Oronoco and Francis (Sue) of Ehrenberg, Ariz. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home-Mahler Chapel in Pine Island, and an hour before the service Thursday at the church.
