William Henry was born to Patrick and Sarah (Shelton) Henry in 1763 in Hanover County, Virginia.
He married Elizabeth Graves Cooke, a wealthy widow, August 21, 1787. She was born in 1744 in Rhode Island. They had no children.
William applied for a land grant in 1790 and received a patent for 173 acres on the south side of the Neuse Riverin North Carolina in 1793. He applied again and received a second patent in 1799 for 100 acres on the north side of the Neuse River by Swift Creek. He was the elected sheriff of Craven County, North Carolina, from 1794 until his death in 1798. After his death, Elizabeth applied for a third grant in 1801 and received a patent for 300 acres on the south side of the Neuse River. Elizabeth died in New Bern, Craven County, in 1825.
