Alexander inherited half of Saura Town Lands, which he sold to his brother-in-law George Winston. He was a very scholarly gentleman with a large library, but a poor business manager. He died destitute at the home of his son Dr. Patrick Henry.
He married on 10 Feb 1814 in Campbell Co., VA, Paulina Jordan Cabell b. 1796 in Lunchburg, Campbell Co., VA, d. 11 Nov 1833; they had the following 12 children: (1) George Lafayette b. 1815 in Bedford Co., VA, who married Margaretta Mason; (2) Laura Sade b. 1817 d. 1831 Campbell Co., VA; (3) Dr. Patrick b. 1818 who married Clara Yancey, no children; (4) Sarah Winston who married her first cousin, Dr. George C. Carrington; (5) Alexander Spotswood Jr. b. 1820 d. 1828; (6) John Robert who married Frances Edwards; (7) Paulina who married Bartlett Jones; (8) Marion Fontain who married Samuel Tyree; (9) Alexander Spotswood d. 1830 age 2; (10) William Lewis who lived with Dr. Patrick Henry d. 1855 at age 25; (11) Alice Winston b. 1831; and (12) Marie Antionette who married Andrew Hamrick, no children;
