E.J. Atkins, age 79, of the Rabbit Hop Community, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 23rd at St. Josephs Hospital. A native of Estatoe he was a son of the late Von and Rexie Miller Atkins. He was also preceded in death by brothers: CW 'Dub' and Larry Atkins; brother-in-law, Harley Murphy and sister-in-law, Edna Atkins. E.J. was of the Pentecostal Faith and attended Estatoe Church of God. He loved coon hunting and trout fishing.
Surviving is his loving wife of sixty one and a half years, Mary Magdalene Allen Atkins; daughter, Bonnie Atkins Braswell and husband, Wayne, of Jacks Creek; son, Ricky Atkins and wife, Tammy, of Double Island; grandchildren: Kevin, Danielle and Dakota Braswell and Jeremy and Haley Atkins; great-grandson, Parker Wiseman Braswell; siblings: Charles Atkins and wife, Ruth, of Marion, Pauline Murphy of Spruce Pine, Bill Atkins of Micaville and Barbara Silvers and husband, Harry, of Marion and sisters-in-law: Faye Atkins of Estatoe and Margie Atkins of Marion. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 27th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Wayne Braswell, Rev. Charles Atkins and Pastor John Divine II will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. in the Estatoe Church of God Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kevin Braswell, Dakota Braswell, Jeremy Atkins, Bryan Silvers and Gene Allen. Honorary pallbearer will be Parker Wiseman Braswell
