Leo Deringer, 86, a lifelong resident of Strasburg, ND, went to his eternal rest on Monday, March 3, 2008.

Leo was born on November 30, 1921 in Strasburg, the son of George and Barbara (Welk) Deringer. Leo attended school through the eighth grade and served in the Army. He returned from military service and took over the family farm.

Leo married Clara Kraft on June 10, 1945 at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg. He farmed with his wife and family until November 17, 1986, when they retired and moved into Strasburg, ND.

Leo never really retired because he had so many interests and hobbies and always loved helping others. He loved gardening, making pickled watermelons, playing cards, especially pinochle, collecting cans and crushing them in his "shed" and recycling them for his grandchildren's "Christmas surprises."

He volunteered many hours at the Strasburg Care Center as the "Bingo Caller" and any other jobs needed. Leo was recognized along with his wife Clara, as Volunteers of the Year. He was also known as the "Mole Man" and was called on by neighbors and friends for help. Once he brought his traps, those moles didn't stand a chance.

Leo was also very active in his church, St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. He attended daily mass and served as an usher.

Leo is survived by his wife of 63 years, Clara; one son and daughter-in-law: Al and Dorie Deringer of Fargo, ND; two daughters and sons-in-law: R. Debra and Larry Heller of Fond du Lac, WI and Mary Jean and Tom Holm of Morris, MN; six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren: Sean (Tammy) Deringer, Aaron (Chrystal) Deringer, Kara (Tim) Meier, Theresa (Joe) Samek, Pat Holm, Jim Williams, Larry (Debbie) Heller and Kathe (Steve) Magoline; eight great grandchildren and five step-grandchildren: Devon and Brianna Deringer, Alex, Camille and William Deringer, Easton, Griffin and Maggie Meier, Hailey, Jared and Justin Magoline and Zoe and Ava Heller; one brother: Pius of Bismarck, ND; two sisters: Christine Baumgartner of Bismarck and Angie Murphy of Blue Earth, MN; five sisters-in-law: Bertha Deringer, Eva Heilman, Rose Rohrich, Jenny Malsom and Whitey Wohl and special sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Phyllis and Bob Fischer.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and infant sister, two brothers, Victor and Eugene and two sisters, Anna Mary Schwab and Agnes Kuss.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7, 2008 at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, ND, with Rev. Leonard Eckroth and Rev. Al Leary officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by Strasburg VFW.
