Gene was raised on the family farm near Strasburg, ND., which was close to the homestead of his Welk maternal grandparents. He attended country schools, Strasburg High School, and served in the U.S. Army as a medical corpsman.

He was married at Ft. Pierre, SD., Feb. 23, 1963 and was the father of two children. The family lived in Ft. Pierre, where Gene worked on the Oahe Dam and for the State Highway Department. The family moved to Loveland, CO., in 1973. Gene worked for Eastman Kodak Co., in Windsor, CO.

He retired and returned to North Dakota in 1991, residing in Linton at the time of his death at age 59 of cancer. Gene enjoyed restoring cars and was a member of the Moose Lodge. Gene was the youngest child of George and Barbara (Welk) Deringer and the first of their children to pass away.

He was survived by his former wife, his son and daughter-in-law, his daughter, and three grandchildren by his son. Gene was also survived by three brothers, Leo, Victor and Pius, and four sisters, Anna Mary Schwab, Agnes Kuss, Christine Baumgartner, and Angie Giesinger.
