Velma Hughes Davis retired teacher
CORINTH - Velma Hughes Davis, 89, a retired teacher, died of heart failure Monday at Magnolia Regional Health Center.

Services are 1 1 a.m. Thursday at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson. Visitation is after 9 a.m. today.

Mrs. Davis was a member of First United Methodist Church. She had lived in the Jackson area for 80 years. She served in United Methodist Women, Circle One Magnolia Hospital Auxiliary Craft Group, Shakespeare Club, the Corinth Music Club and other community arts groups. She was past president of Hinds County Teachers Association and Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. Mrs. Davis taught at Byram Elementary School and Byram High School, where she was chosen many times as Star Teacher. She was elected senior class sponsor many times and she served as the school's newspaper sponsor.

She was the widow of Homer B. "Jack" Davis.

Survivors include: daughter, Janet Davis Gray of Corinth; brother, Don Hughes of North Carrollton; and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Corinth or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale St., Memphis TN 38105.
