Joseph was the fourth of nine children of Benjamin Hampton (Sr.), a Quaker farmer, and his wife Margaret Pownall Hampton.
He married Rebecca Quinby on the 17th day of the 11th month, 1814 at Monthly Meeting in Wrightstown. They had eleven children: Simeon in 1815, Levi in 1816, Sarah in 1881, Quinby in 1821, Edward H. in 1823, Martha in 1825, Comly in 1828, Elizabeth in 1830, Anna in 1832, Joseph in 1835, and Mary in 1836.
After his marriage Joseph lived for a short time in Byberry, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, then for the rest of his life on a farm in Buckingham.
