Death claimed Judge J. E. Clem this (Thursday) morning after a lifetime spent largely in the public life of Athens and Limestone County and many friends throughout the county will mourn his passing.
Born in March 1876, Judge Clem would have been 71 years old next month. He was born in this county and spent his entire life here. During a career of public service, he has been circuit court clerk, municiple judge and justice of the peace and was a lifetime honorary member of the Masons.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at two o'clock at the Athens Methodist Church with Dr. B. T. Waites officiating. Burial will follow at the Athens City Cemetery, Spry directing. The Masonic Order will have charge of the funeral.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara Hine Clem; 5 children, Hobart Clem of Athens; James Emanuel Clem Jr., of Decatur, Mrs. William E. Totten of Rochester, N.Y., Miss Mary Elizabeth Clem of Athens and Marvin Clem of Athens; three brothers, A. L. Clem, J. D. Clem, and R. M. Clem of Athens; 3 sisters, Mrs J. B. Freeman and Mrs. Jack Barksdale of Athens and Mrs. Vernon Smith of Fayetteville, TN.
