Georgia Winifred Nye, 69, of 298 Thunderbird Road, SE, known for her service to education on both local and state levels died Monday morning at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of Frank Nye, retired associate editor of The Gazette.
Mrs. Nye was a member of Cedar Raids Community School District Board of directors from November 1957 to September 1966.
She was among the initial appointees in 1964 t the board of the Iowa Higher Education Facilities Commission, now the College Aid Commission, that appointment was by Gov. Harold Hughes, She was reappointed by Gov Robert Ray and served on the commission until ill health forced her to resign in 1972. She was commission chairman from 1969 to 1972.
Born in Red Oak, Iowa, November 4, 1912, daughter of George Pendleton Cole and Lena Adeline Pilkington, she attended public schools there and received a bachelor of arts degree from Grinnell College in 1934. She was married to Frank Nye October 17, 1937.
For several years while on the cedar Rapids school board, she represented the distill on the Iowa Association of School Boards. In 1964-1965, she served as that organization's president, She serve a 3 year term as director of the Educational Commission of the States, a national organization.
Mrs. Nye was past president of the Cedar Rapids League of Women Voters and the Cedar Rapids branch of the American Association of University Women. She served on the board of Public Health Nursing and was a member of the Junior League PEO and First Congregational Church.
Serving in addition to her husband, are three daughters, Linda Poulos of Toronto, Canada, Mrs. John Hoover of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Deborah Nye, Iowa City. three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs Frank Bazar, Red Oak, Mrs. Robert Caldwell of Laguna Hills, California, and Mrs. Sydney Edward, Clermont, California.
Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church by Glen Bender and Jerry Stevenson, pastors of the church. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Friends, if they wish, may contribute to Grinnell College of a university or college of their choice.
