Lewis Timberlake, age 90, passed away on Friday, June 3, 2022, in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Born on Oct. 14, 1931, in Rockville, Indiana, to parents, Warren and Gladys (Myers) Timberlake, Lewis is survived by his children, Jennifer (Brian) Swinehart, Julie (Dennis) Kopp and Phillip (Amy) Timberlake; and stepchildren, Scot (Felicia) Thomas and Stuart (Jan) Thomas; grandchildren, Courtney, Andrew and Valerie; and step-grandchildren, Sara (Matthew), SueAnn, Charles (Phuong), Joylynn (Odi), Katelyn (Seth), Daniel (Cassie) and Joshua (Malena); great granddaughter, Amelia; and step-great-grandchildren, Reed, Gabriel, Zach and Zeb.

Lewis was preceded in death by his first wife, Diane Timberlake; his second wife, Joan Thomas Timberlake; stepchildren, Peter (Claire) Thomas and Gary Thomas; brothers, James and Jerry Timberlake; and sisters, Esther Chezem and Ramona Baer.

A 1949 graduate of Rockville High School, Lewis received his Bachelor and Master of Science from Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana State University). Lewis proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and later, joined the Army Reserves. He retired at the rank of major. In civilian life, he worked as a high school teacher and then as harbor master at the Michigan City Port Authority and the Hammond Marina.

"Everyone can sing," Lewis said matter-of-factly. (There were no exceptions.) Lewis lived a life of music. He was a musician and a music educator. He directed the music program at Rome City High School. In Michigan City, he directed the choirs at Elston High School, and at St. John's United Church of Christ.

Lewis served in many ways at First United Methodist Church in Michigan City. He directed the handbell choir, established an education scholarship and created a beloved annual madrigal dinner. He enjoyed the Michiana Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge and Monday Musicale. He loved to garden and to host a grilled meal on his screened-in porch. If you visited, you left with a full stomach and your arms filled with plants.

Lew, you will be deeply missed.
