James Winans was born Oct. 14, 1801, in New Jersey; died May 28, 1875, in California, buried in Goodyears Bar Cemetery, Downieville, Sierra County, California.

Married on May 29, or 30, 1826, in Miami County, Ohio, to Elizabeth Gearhart, who was born Dec. 12, 1806; died July 30, 1843, buried in McKinney cemetery, Section 32, Springcreek Township, west side of Lockinton Road, north of Brobaw road, Miami County, Ohio.

Elizabeth was a daughter of William and Elizabeth Gearhart.

Elizabeth, the wife of James, died July 30, 1843, when son Stephen was two hours old. James was very grieved and despondent. He sold his property, left his boys with relatives in Miami County, and rode a horse to near Galena, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, and worked in the lead mines.

At some later time he returned to Ohio and got some of the boys and took them to Illinois with him, and boarded them in the hotel. In March, 1848, while a resident of Jo Daviess County, Illinois, and as Administrator of Estate of Anthony, he sold 70 acres of land in Miami County, Ohio. He had previously sold 90 acres of the quarter Section designated as land of Anthony Winans, deceased.

James and his three youngest sons, Henderson, Lewis, and Stephen, are listed in Oct. 2, 1850, U.S. Census of Grant County, Wisconsin. The next known of him he was in California, and it is said that he went there, to Yuba County, in the early 1850's. He entered a quarter section of land in Yuba county from the Government in 1874, but evidently did not fulfill his obligation before his death, as his son, Jacob, completed payment and acquired possession some years later.
James, his son, Jacob Keffer, and Catherine, wife of Jacob, are buried on a lot enclosed by an iron fence, with the name "Winans" inscribed above the gate
