Margaret May Garner
April 1, 1927 - March 12, 2018

Margaret May Garner, age 90, passed away at Arbor Acres Retirement Center on Monday, March 12, 2018.

She was born in Winston-Salem, April 1, 1927.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ila Jane Hoots Garner; father, Samuel W. Garner; brothers Paul Garner (Ruth), Thad Garner (Mildred), Harold Garner (Mariam), Ralph Garner (Alice), and sisters Virginia Sherrill (Frank, Sr.), and Betty McKinney (Mac); as well as nephews Walter Garner and Reg Garner.

Margaret attended Winston-Salem Schools and graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School. She graduated from Meredith College in 1948 with a degree in Math. From there she began working for Security Life Insurance, which became Integon Insurance, and retired in the early 1980"s. Travel was one of her loves, visiting many countries around the world, including China and Japan. She and her sisters and brother-in-law traveled to all 48 states together. One of her favorite places was the "Old Cottage" in Salisbury, England. Her sister, Betty, arranged with friends in England to swap houses for months at a time. Another of her highlights was trips with people from her church. The church friends meant the world to her and she could not wait to get back and tell of the adventures. Margaret kept scrapbooks from the trips and had well over 50, two inch binders with all kinds of memorabilia, including pictures of family, friends, and places. In Margaret"s later years, she spent many hours looking through the scrapbooks and enjoyed talking about her adventures with family and friends. The joke at the time was that when she passed away all of her scrapbooks would be buried with her but it would take two caskets as one would not be large enough. She could then reminisce with her brothers, sisters and friends she had been with on her travels.

For many years Margaret was active with the Friendship Force and in her travels she had the pleasure of staying in people"s homes in the foreign countries. She was a loyal member of the DAR, which her mother had researched and joined in the 1950s. Margaret participated as a Docent at Reynolda House which she enjoyed very much. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church on 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC, and claimed to have been a member for the years of her age plus nine months (the time spent in her mother"s womb).

Margaret was a very loving aunt to her nieces and nephews and was like a third grandmother to many of them. She was and is loved by her many nieces and nephews, Thad Garner, Sara Jane Garner, Kathryn Garner, Jane Stroupe (Steve), Frank Sherrill (Nancy), Hal Garner (Patti), Ann Riddle (Arthur), Hal McKinney, Jan McKinney, and Reg"s widow (Betsy), as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

A private burial will be held on Monday, March 19, 2018, at Forsyth Memorial Park, and will be followed by a service at First Baptist Church Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 501 W. 5th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or to a charity of the donor"s choice.
