He was born May 29, 1918, to Samuel W. Garner and Ila Jane Hoots Garner in Winston-Salem.
He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and served in the U.S. Army in World War II for 21/2 years. Mr. Garner was vice president of TW Garner Food Co. and was a member of the Winston-Salem Jaycees. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was an ordained deacon and served on various church committees.
Preceding him in death were three brothers, Harold Hoots Garner Sr., Dr. S. Paul Garner and Thad W. Garner. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Alice Turner Garner; a daughter, Ann Garner Riddle and husband W. Arthur Riddle III; a son, Ralph Edward "Reg" Garner and wife Elizabeth Redwine Garner; three grandchildren, Dorothea, Heyward and Elizabeth Garner; three sisters, Virginia G. Sherrill of Winston-Salem, Elizabeth G. McKinney of Hampton, Va., and Margaret May Garner of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Garner family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the loving care of Dr. Vernard F. Bond Jr. (deceased) and Dr. Lee Russell Rocamora.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Russell Ritchel, Dr. Jeff White, Dr. David Burr and the Rev. Patricia Garner. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, 3655 Reed St, Winston-Salem, NC 27107; the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 25086, Winston-Salem, NC 27114; or First Presbyterian Church, 300 N. Cherry St, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. A private committal service will be held for the family at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.
