Mrs. Virginia Garner Sherrill, 92, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at Salemtowne, her home for the past 12 years. She was born in Crutchfield, Surry County, on February 3, 1914, the daughter of Samuel W. and Ila Jane Hoots Garner. The family moved to Forsyth County when Virginia was a child and she spent the rest of her life in Winston-Salem. She graduated from Mineral Springs High School and Salem College, with majors in mathematics and history. She was a teacher at Gray High School until 1944 and returned to teaching in the early 1960’s when Dalton Junior High School opened. She taught mathematics at Dalton until she retired in 1976. She grew up as a member of First Baptist Church and joined Ardmore Moravian Church when she married Franklin Woodford Sherrill in 1941. She enjoyed being a docent at Reynolda House and was a member of the Old North State Chapter of the DAR. While her health allowed, she enjoyed traveling to Europe, England, China, Japan, and throughout the United States. Her husband, her parents, and her brothers Paul, Thad, Harold and Ralph predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Sherrill Stroupe and husband Steve of Libertyville, Illinois; her son Franklin Sherrill, Jr. and wife Nancy of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Christopher Stroupe of Dartmouth, NH; Beth Stroupe of Newton, MA; Kelley Sherrill Kirkman and husband Steve of Winston-Salem; Wood Sherrill and wife Katie of Kalispell, Montana; and Brad Sherrill and wife Ali of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchild Grayson Kirkman of Winston-Salem; sisters Elizabeth Garner McKinney of Hampton, VA and Margaret May Garner of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law Alice Turner Garner of Winston-Salem and many nieces and nephews. - See more at: http://www.salemfh.com/obituaries/25/#sthash.cUhr8Fms.dpuf
