He came to the United States with his parents when about nine years old, the family settling near Humphrey, Nebraska. As a boy of 16 years, he served an apprenticeship in a blacksmith shop at Leigh and about forty years ago he came to Battle Creek and established a business which he conducted for many years. He served successive terms on the village board and during late years he has had charge of the waterworks. Very few possess his mechanical ingenuity and he served the village most efficiently in various capacities. He was married to Miss Mary Zimmerman at Boscobel, Wisconsin, on December 26, 1893.
Aside from his wife, Mr. Dittrick was survived by two sons, Carl of Battle Creek and Joe of Loreto; five daughters, Mrs. Henry Bierman, Mrs. John Bierman and the Misses Louise, Anna and Delphia Dittrick of Battle Creek; three brothers, Fred and Franz Dittrick of Verdigre and William Dittrick of Battle Creek; and five sisters, Mrs. Julia Hall of Albany, Oregon, Mrs. Mary Graves of Norfolk, Mrs. Bertha Zach of Humphrey, Mrs. Louise Murray of Lander, Wyoming, and Mrs. Emma Brozek of Battle Creek. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren.
