Virgil Burress, 90, of Huntsville, Tenn., died January 2, 1998, at the Baptist Health Care Center in Lenoir City, Tenn. Born in the Smokey Junction community, April 10, 1907, he was the son of the late Mode and Serelda Daugherty Jane Burress. In addition to his parents, he was preceded also in death by wives Edith Lowe Burress and Tillie Jeffers Burress; two brothers; and four sisters. He was a member of Norma Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years, and a member of Oneida Lodge #695 F & AM since 1954. He is survived by five sons: Clifford Burress and wife, Joan of the Niggs Creek community, Jimmy Burress of Norma, Arnold Burress and wife, Sheila of Dunkirk, Ind., Doyle Burress and wife, Chloe of Eufaula, Ala., and Argil Burress of Harriman, Tenn.; four daughters: Imogene Vann of Pioneer, Tenn., Joan Cook and husband, Ted of Knoxville, Tenn., June Sharp of Norma, Tenn., and Janet Chambers and husband Roy of Lenoir City, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives. Funeral services were conducted January 4, 1998, in the chapel of Four Oaks Funeral Home with Masonic Last Rite Service and Reverends Leo Williams and James Pennington officiating. The Mason Singers sang. Graveside services were conducted January 5, 1998 in the River View Cemetery. Four Oaks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
