Donald Glynn Brooks, Sr
January 30, 1937 - January 7, 2023

Donald Glynn Brooks, Sr was born January 30, 1937 in Winnfield, Louisiana, and died January 7, 2023 at the Cornerstone at the Ranch nursing home in Lafayette Louisiana. He was born to J.C. Brooks and Olive (Barnard) Brooks.

He leaves behind his wife, Carol Jean (Brewton) Brooks, his four children, Don Brooks Jr, Stephen Brooks, Scott Brooks, Laura Weissinger Brooks, and three grandchildren, Parker Brooks, Mason Brooks, and Russell Martin.

Don grew up in Winnfield, Louisiana, and spent much of his youth riding horses and exploring nature. At age nine Don assisted his father in the family's business, at the local Pontiac dealership. After graduating from Winnfield High School in 1955, he attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he received a bachelors degree in accounting in 1959. While in college he was a member and Treasurer of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Don would often say that his time at LSU was the most fun he had in his life and would often speak about being at Tiger Stadium during their 1958 championship season. Don continued to be a devoted fan of the LSU Tigers throughout his life. In 1961 Don married his childhood sweetheart, Carol Jean Brewton.

In 1960 and 1961, Don worked for Shell Oil Company in New Orleans as a staff accountant. In 1962 he went to work for the Internal Revenue Service as a field agent based in Alexandria, Louisiana. Don quickly determined that accounting was not the career he had expected, so in 1965 Don purchased a wholesale Texaco distributorship based in Many, Louisiana; a company he would own and operated until 1986. Never one to remain still for long, Don started and ran a trucking company from 1971 to 1974.

In 1973, the Don moved his family moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana, and merged businesses with his father in-law, who also owned and operated a Texaco distributorship in nearby Winn Parish. Don was President of the Coordinating Development Council of Northwest Louisiana for several years and was expected by many to eventually run for a state political office.

However, in 1976 Don's life was turned upside down after suffering a severe stroke at only 39 years old. The stroke made running businesses exceedingly difficult, but it never stopped him from being an active member of his community or to ever give up. Don remained active, loved talking with people—regardless of his speech problems; he always handled it with self-deprecating humor. In 1989 Don and his wife opened River Oaks Bed & Breakfast in their home in Natchitoches. They enjoyed meeting guests and sharing hospitality and stories with people from all around the world. In 2003, Don and Carol moved to Cumming, Georgia in order to be closer to his then-young grandsons. In 2018 they returned to Natchitoches—eventually moving into the Cornerstone at the Ranch nursing home in Lafayette, Louisiana. Don would pass away peacefully while holding his wife's hand in the late evening of January 7, 2023.

Don and his wife, Carol, spent 62 years together. Through good times and bad times, through sickness and good health, Don was a devoted husband and father. He truly loved his entire family—his wife, children, parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, and cousins. Don was admired for his humor, intelligence, determination, and perseverance. Don was friendly, outgoing and kind. Even though he was handicapped by his strokes, he was an inspiration for so many people. In fact, many that he never even knew.
