Howard J. Batt, 68, passed away Saturday, March 30, 1996, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.


Funeral services were 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 2, at St. John Lutheran Church, with Rev. Bryce Bereuler officiating. Pallbearers were Tim Angus, Tom Angus, Roger Ball, Brian Grisham, Brian Reimers and Rev. Russell Reimers. Burial will be in the Burt Township Cemetery, rural Burt, Iowa, with full Military Honors conducted by the Burt VFW Post #5236.


Howard James Batt was born October 18, 1927, in Titonka, the son of William and Beula (Taylor) Batt. He attended school in Titonka. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Margaret Katherine Reimers on September 10, 1950, in Burt. He was employed as a custodian at Burt school for 12 years. He then worked for Burt Hardware Store. They then moved to Algona, where he worked as an custodian with the Algona Community Schools for 16 years, until he retired in 1992. Martha preceded him in death on May 2, 1994. He enjoyed sports and was an umpire for 30 years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Burt VFW.


Surviving are two sisters, Betty Miller and Maxine Angus, both of Burt; two brothers, Robert (Patricia) Batt of Loveland, CO, and Harold (Emogene) Batt of Cedar Falls; and one sister-in-law, Pauline Batt of Irvington.


He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers, William Batt, PFC Richard Batt, who was serving in the U.S. Army and was killed in France during World War II, and SFC Daryl Batt, who was serving in the U.S. Army and was killed in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, two brothers-in-law, John Miller and Robert Angus and two nephews, Karl Batt and Dennis Miller.
