Betty Jean Miller was born on October 31, 1929, in Titonka, IA, the daughter of William and Beula (Taylor) Batt. She attended school in Titonka and Algona before graduating from Burt High School in 1948. She was united in marriage to John Monroe Miller on August 29, 1948, in Burt, IA. The couple farmed together for seventeen years. On Saturdays Betty would gather up one or two of her children, deliver eggs and go get her hair done. She was always keeping busy either around the farm or with her jobs. Betty moved her family off the farm West of Burt when John died in 1965, into town, in a house that was the Methodist Parsonage and where she remained for fifty-two years. Betty worked from 1966 until 1993 at the Burt Community School, where she cooked and later moved to be a custodian. Betty would also clean the Presbyterian Church. Her interests included bowling, gardening and she was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Betty was a member of the Burt Presbyterian Church, a fifty-nine-year member in Burt then Algona Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 68 OES and was a long-time member of the V.F.W. ladies auxiliary. Betty Jean Miller, 87 of Burt Iowa, died Tuesday May 22, 2017, with her family beside her at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona Iowa. She is survived by her children, Diann Miller of Wayland, IA, Donna (Elmer) Alt of Algona, IA and Darlene (Pat) Prothman of Algona; daughter-in-law, Deb Miller of Algona; grandchildren, Jeremy Prothman, Jim Prothman, Chris Alt, Ryan Alt, Jennifer Lawson, Amanda Miller, Marissa Miller and Danielle Alt; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine Angus of Burt, IA; brother, Harold Batt; sisters-in-law, Emogene Batt, Haruyo Batt and Mabeline Lovstad, brothers-in-law, Paul Miller and Bernie Miller as well as many other extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John M. Miller in 1965; son, Dennis Miller; brothers, William Jr., Richard, Daryle, Howard and Robert John Batt; sisters-in-law, Patty Batt, Margret Batt, Pauline Batt, Julia Miller and Phyllis Miller; as well as brother-in-law, Raymond Lovstad.
