1935 - 2022
VETERAN

On December 29, 2022, we said a final farewell to our devotedly family-loving, hardworking, jack-of-all-trades, friend to many, awesome Dad, Grandpa, and loving Husband, Leon Edward McNeil.

Leon was born August 26, 1935, in Benson, Arizona, to Morgan and Margie Murray McNeil. If you're asking yourself, "Where the hell is Benson?", which was printed on an actual t-shirt Leon proudly wore, then you probably haven't had the unique experience of listening to Leon tell stories of he and his siblings living a Tom Sawyer-type childhood in the Arizona desert.

When Dad was 14 years old, he moved to Orem, Utah, when his father was hired at Geneva Steel. After one year working for Geneva, Morgan and Margie bought a house on an acre of land next to Dick and Berniece Wilkinson, where Leon first "spotted a girl with dark hair, light green shorts and white blouse."

After two adventurous years attending his junior and senior year at Pleasant Grove High School, while also working at Bunker's Feed, Leon decided to propose to the girl with dark hair, whose name was Jennie Lee Wilkinson. They were shortly thereafter married in the Manti Utah Temple on July 16, 1953.

After a few years of service in the National Guard, Leon was hired by Geneva Steel, where he first worked in electrical maintenance in the coke plant, then later, in the nitrogen plant. After he retired from Geneva in 1985, Leon was self-employed doing remodeling and maintenance work for Dan Davies, and later, Trafalga Fun Center.

Leon shared a full and adventurous life with Jennie Lee, starting with joining the Orem Riding Club, traveling often to Arizona to visit family, taking many road and camping trips with family and friends, spending many years hunting, and spending time at the McNeil family cabin in Indianola. They were also avid Utah Jazz and BYU fans, but mostly they were fanatical fans of their grandchildren's activities and accomplishments.

After living in their Orem home for 54 years, they decided to downsize and enjoy their golden years in Springville, Utah, where they made even more friends while playing hand-in-foot, going to weekly lunches, and still watching any event that their grandkids participated in.

Leon is survived by his children: Todd & Janalyn McNeil, Brad & Jan Farrer, Lee & Sandi McNeil; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and his siblings: Mavis Burmingham, Carolyn McNeil, Marva Box, and Jim McNeil.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jennie Lee; his parents, Morgan and Margie McNeil; and his brothers, Gary McNeil and Tom McNeil.

Services will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Berg Mortuary located at 500 North State Street, Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
