Original name in German, Johannes Ulrich Beer, though other accounts give it to be Hans Ueli Beer; went by the name of John U. Beer in America, while his brother Hans went by the name of John Beer. Son of Christen Beer and Katharina Uhlmann Beer. Came to America from Switzerland Aug. 1866, arriving in New York City with his brothers Ulrich and Simon; these 3 would join a fourth brother, Peter Beer, at Upper Sandusky, Ohio (Peter had been in America since about 1854). The Beer brothers relocated to Richland County, Ohio about 1867 where John and Simon originally worked in railroad construction.

Married Mary Ann Lantz in 1869 [b. 6 Sept. 1846, d. 15 May 1926]. In the early 1870's purchased 47 1/2 acres and became a farmer in Mifflin Township, Richland County, Ohio; all of their children born on the farm except Samuel and Callie. Cemetery record: s/o Christian & Katherina Uhlman, h/o Mary Anna.

Children: Samuel Beer (1870-1942), Caroline "Callie" Beer Jones (1873-1952), Stephen Beer (1876-1923), John A. Beer (1878-1955), Levi W. Beer (1880-1963), Jesse Beer (1881-1982), Daniel Beer (1883-1960), Silvanus Beer (1886-1890), and Mary Beer (1889-1899). All of John U. Beer's children are also buried at Lantz Cemetery, except for son Samuel Beer who is at Mansfield Cemetery.
