Hazel Marie Collins, age 86, of Clinton, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 in Harrisonville, Missouri.
Hazel Marie Collins was born on January 3, 1936 in Deepwater, Missouri to James Edward Collins and Ethel Marie (Pennington) Collins. She was the 3rd child of ten children.
Hazel lost her sight during her first year of elementary school at 6 years of age. Later at approximately 11 years she went to the St. Louis school for the blind and graduated high school in 1957. She learned to be a medical transcriptionist and worked at several hospitals in the Kansas City area until retirement.
Even though blind she lived alone for 50 years and could get herself to work on buses, etc. She enjoyed church services and attended regularly.
Reading her Braille Bible was important, and she read many other books.
Listening to music and audio books filled her days. Traveling was a highlight with trips to Hawaii, an Alaskan cruise, and getting to go to Europe.
Hazel is survived by 3 sisters, Jo Ann Cloud of Pharr, Texas, Donna McCurdy and Patricia Collins of Clinton, Missouri, 2 brothers, Carl Collins and wife Dixie of Creighton, Missouri, Phillip Collins and wife Rita of Independence, Missouri, 2 sisters in law, Sue Collins and Shirley Collins of Independence, Missouri, and scores of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Betty Long, 3 brothers, John Collins, Jim Collins and Andy Collins, sister-in-law Jeanie Collins, 3 brothers in law, David Cloud, Marvin Long and Bill McCurdy.
