Direct Ancestress of U.S. President Millard Fillmore (1800-1874), 13th President of The United States. This lineage is discussed at the tail-end of her brief bio.

Phillipa (a.k.a. Phillis) Perkins was the eldest daughter and second child (of 7) of Corporal Jacob Perkins (1646-1719), son of Quartermaster John Perkins, Jr., and his first wife Sarah (Wainwright) Perkins (1650-1688) of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Phillipa was named after her maternal grandmother, Phillipa (Sewell) Wainwright, who died the year before Phillipa was born. Phillipa's mother Sarah would also die quite young, but fortunately after Phillipa was already married. Her father Jacob Perkins would remarry and have 7 more children with his second wife Sarah Kinsman.

Phillipa married Thomas Emerson (1662-1738), son of Nathaniel Emerson, on November 20, 1685 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. The marriage produced 5 children to reach adulthood - 4 daughters and 1 son.

Phillipa's in-laws, her father-in-law Nathaniel Emerson (1630-1712) and brother-in-law The Rev. John Emerson (1654-1712), were directly involved with the Salem Witch Trials of 1692-1693. Nathaniel Emerson was a Juror in the Witch Trials during 1692-1693. Brother-in-law Rev. John Emerson was both an Accuser and a Juror. Later he became disgraced for his role in this embarrassing debacle of Justice in American Colonial History. Phillipa and husband Thomas Emerson remained removed from this horrible travesty of events, although Phillipa's elderly Great-Aunt Mary (Perkins) Bradbury (1614 -1700) was convicted as a witch and sentenced to execution. But thanks to the intervention of family and friends her execution was delayed and she was later discharged and released from prison.

Horror would strike Phillipa's family again, fifteen years later, this time with her relatives on her maternal side - the Wainwrights. Her maternal uncle Captain Simon Wainwright (1660-1708) would be murdered by the Indians during the Haverhill Massacre of 1708. Also murdered in this same massacre was her maternal aunt Mehetible (Wainwright) Rolfe (1662-1708) along with her husband The Rev. Benjamin Rolfe. And their youngest daughter, who just turned 2 years old, was snatched from her mother's arms and killed having her head smashed against a rock by the Indians. Two of Mehetible's children escaped the massacre by being hidden in the basement by a loyal servant girl.

Two of Phillipa's daughters with husband Thomas Emerson married, two brothers, sons of Samuel Story (1660-1726). Samuel Story was a Veteran of King Philip's War and the grandson of Reginald Foster whose house in Ipswich, built in 1640, is still standing today. Second daughter Elizabeth Emerson (1693-1780) married Ephraim Story, direct ancestors of this author, and his youngest brother Stephen Story (1697-1766), a church deacon, married youngest daughter Mary Emerson (1704-1792). They would become the Great-Great Grandparents of U.S. President Millard Fillmore (1800-1874).

Phillipa's 5 children with husband Thomas Emerson are as follows:
- Sarah (Emerson) Hunt (1691-1778) m. William Hunt, Jr. - 10 children
- Elizabeth (Emerson) Story Smith (1693-1780) m. (1st) Ephraim Story - 4 children; (2nd) Jonathan Smith.
- Thomas Emerson (1699-1782) m. Sarah Martin - 10 children.
- Mehetible (Emerson) Burnham (1702-1792) m. Solomon Burnham - 10 children.
- Mary (Emerson) Story (1704-1792) m. Stephen Story - 12 children.

Husband Thomas Emerson and Phillipa's direct descent to U.S. President Millard Fillmore is as follows:
Daughter Mary (Emerson) Story (1704-1792) - through her daughter Phillipa (Story) Wood (1726-1796) - through her daughter Hapzibah (Wood) Fillmore (1747-1783) - through her son, Nathaniel Fillmore, Jr. (1771-1863), the father of United States President Millard Fillmore.

Phillipa died just 12 days after her husband Thomas Emerson died.

Authored by Shaun L. Creighton, A Direct Descendant of Phillipa and the Emerson, Perkins (multiple lines), Cogswell (multiple) and Burnham (multiple) family lines.

A Historical footnote: Phillipa's beloved maternal aunt, Mehetible Rolfe, killed in the Haverhill Massacre, was the namesake for one of Phillipa's own daughters. Phillipa's aunt Mehetible would become, through her daughter Elizabeth (Rolfe) Checkley, the maternal grandmother of Elizabeth (Checkley) Adams the first wife of Massachusetts Governor and American Patriot Samuel Adams and mother of his only two children. Samuel Adams, of course, was a second cousin to President John Adams, second President of the United States.
