Sarah Elmira Grubb (or Grubbs) was born in Pittsburgh to John C Grubb and Susanna Austin, the 4th of 13 children, the last of whom was born in Oregon. The family moved to Michigan for a number of years, and about 1854 or so they made the overland journey along the Oregon Trail, settling in Benton County, Oregon. There Sarah Elmira met and married Edward Herndon Piper Jr, an immigrant from Illinois. They had two children: May Florence (or Florence May), who was born about 1862 and died before 1880; and Ernest Claud, who grew to adulthood and had a family of his own. Elmira and Edward lived in Benton County where they had a farm, then in Marion County where they had another farm. They moved to South Salem around the time of their son's birth and lived there until after Edward's death in 1899. Sarah Elmira Grubbs Piper died nine years later.
