Richard Hale Hickman, age 84, of Clinton, Missouri passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at the Benton House of Raymore, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel in Clinton with visitation starting at 10:00 AM prior to the service. Burial to follow with military honors in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, Missouri. Richard Hale Hickman was born the baby brother of five siblings to Elmer and Lucetta Hickman on April 26th, 1938. He grew up in and around the Clinton area, eventually graduating from the old Clinton high school on 3rd street in 1956. Traveling for work in the next few years, would take him to the Richmond, MO area, where he would meet and later marry Phyllis Dehart in 1961. Induction into the US Army that same year, saw him traveling to Korea after basic training, and then not returning again until months after the birth of their son, Christopher. Another son, Gregory, would bless their family later in 1966. Moving to the Clinton area, Richard "Dick" began working as a lineman for the Missouri Public Service Company. He would hold other positions in MO Pub over several years until eventually taking his last role with them as a supervisor in the Platte City area. It was in Platte City that Dick became an active member of the Masonic Lodge, working for the right to become a Master Mason and ultimately a Shriner. He absolutely loved his participation in their Mini Rod Club. He would fold his 6'3" body into his tiny car and entertain parade goers with his fellow Shriners. He enjoyed fascinating children with their high speed, tiny car antics. Retirement brought him once more to Clinton, over the next years Dick relaxed at their cabin near Truman Lake frequently. He spent quality time with his growing grandkids and family. He even took up wood working. He loved to play his practiced chanter in the hopes to one day playing the bagpipes. As his health allowed, he was a member of the VFW Honor & Color Guard. At this time, he was a member of the Drakes United Methodist Church. Always, he remained active in his Masonic Lodge. Dick recently shared that he was most proud of those times he would help transport children to the St. Louis Shriner's Hospital over the years. In 2013, with the passing of Phyllis Hickman, he was widowed. Later that year he met Doris Polus and they were married January 18, 2014. Doris and Dick lived in Clinton for the next 8 years, until declining health issues required them to move to assisted living in the Raymore area. Dick remained there until his death November 10th, 2022. Richard was a gentle, loving, and generous, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was slow to anger and quick to forgive. He loved his Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. He absolutely loved that he lived to see the Royals win another World Series and his Chiefs win another Super Bowl. In his last few years, watching his teams alongside his wife, Doris, brought him much comfort and joy. Richard was proceeded in death by his parents, Elmer and Lucetta Hickman; his siblings, Robert Hickman, James Hickman, Elizabeth Hunt, and John Hickman; his late wife, Phyllis Hickman, and their son, Gregory Hickman. Survivors include: his wife, Doris Hickman, of the home; son, Christopher Hickman and wife, Laurie Hickman of Clinton; three grandchildren, Trevor Hickman (Sarah Hickman), Columbia, MO, Anne Hickman (Shelby Hickman), Greenwood, MO, Sarah Stewart (Shandy Stewart), Lowry City, MO; four great-grandchildren Lane Hickman, Callie Hickman, Saylor Stewart, and Brooks Hickman. Also surviving son, Michael Stephenson (Tami Stephenson), Harrisonville, MO, daughter, Tammy Schroer (Ron Schroer), Kansas City, MO; grandchildren Matthew Stephenson (Liz Stephenson), Odessa, MO, Jennifer Jensen (Aaron Jensen), Independence, MO, Jeremy Stephenson (Patty Stephenson), Harrisonville, MO, Rachel Corr (Kevin Corr), Garden City, MO, Mitchell Jeck (Dionne Jeck), Bondurant, IA, Anthony Guss, Osawatomie, KS, Jennifer Smith (Zack Smith), Triplet, MO, Bethany Schroer, Independence, MO and Zachary Schroer, Independence MO; and twenty-seven additional great-grandchildren.
