Football coach, entrepreneur, U.S. Army veteran, husband, father and friend James Robinson of Claremore passed away Oct 23 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 84.
An NCAA football place kicker in the mid-1950s for West Liberty College in West Virginia, Robinson later coached high school place kickers from throughout northeastern Oklahoma until he was well into his 70s. He often spoke proudly by name of the many high school kickers he coached who had gone on to successful careers in the NCAA and NFL.
Prior to his career at West Liberty, Robinson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a decryptor stationed in Alaska where he monitored communications from behind the Iron Curtain.
Robinson was born June 14, 1933 in New Martinsville, West Virginia, the fifth of seven children to Burl and Delora Robinson. He brought his family to Claremore in 1971 where he had lived ever since. He owned his own business as a painting contractor, serving customers in Claremore and its surrounding communities for more than 40 years.
"My dad was the kind of man who would give someone the shirt off his back if he thought it would help," said his youngest daughter Rachael McAnany. "There never was a kinder or more compassionate man." He is said to have loved singing patriotic songs, drinking black coffee, and watching high school football (even at the same time, if possible).
Robinson is survived by his wife Rosemarie and son Darien of Claremore, daughter Teresa Case (Robert) of Claremore, son James of Rancho Mirage, California, daughter Rachael McAnany (Kirk) of Tulsa, brothers Joe Robinson of Ohio and E. Kent Robinson, PhD. of California, and five grandchildren.
