Clemence was raised in the home of his parents with his 12 siblings. He graduated from Towner High School in 1949 where he played football. He continued his education at a business college in Fargo for one year before moving to Denver, Colorado. He lived with his sister, Kay and her husband Jack Lundin and worked in the area. Clemence moved to Rugby and started farming on the farm that his Pa helped him buy. He farmed the first year with his brother, Adam, because Pa said he had to! Clemence started farming with 640 acres and when he retired, he had over 2000 acres. He also had a dairy operation and raised beef cattle. He was a very progressive farmer and was one of the first farmers to start using fertilizer. During his time farming, he won the Soil Conservation Award for Rolette County.
Clemence met the love of his life, Katherine Schumacker at a name's day dance in Rugby. The story is, he held her and wouldn't let go! They were united in marriage on October 27, 1953, at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. They would have been married 69 years this October. Clemence was involved in many business activities, some which were, working for the Federal Government selling and adjusting crop insurance (when adjusting crops, he always gave the farmer a little advantage), was part owner and sat on the board of directors for the Towner Bank, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. After retiring from farming, Clemence and Katherine started new adventures. They built a new home and moved to Rugby. They bought a home in Gold Canyon, Arizona, where they spent around 30 years enjoying the sunshine and newfound friends. They traveled to many places, including, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Russia and Mexico. They also traveled to many places in the United States. One of Clemence's favorite activities was spending time with his grandchildren, reading them a book, telling bedtime stories, and singing to them. He also enjoyed playing cards, dancing, reading and visiting with people.
