Funeral services for Herbert Crandall Hayes, 79, Danbury, who died Monday at a Sioux City hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Danbury Methodist church. Rev. Earl Kurtz will officiate. Burial will be in the Danbury cemetery under direction of the Walter funeral home of Mapleton, Ia.
Mr. Hayes was born September 27, 1878, in Alton, Ill. He left Illinois when a young boy and moved to Kansas City, Mo., with his parents. He attended college at Austin, Minn., and Morningside college in Sioux City.
He married Mae Greenfield, September 24, 1908, at Sibley, Ia. After marriage the couple resided on a farm near Sibley and Ocheyedan, Ia., for a period of four years, and then moved to Ormsby, Minn., where Mr. Hayes worked at an elevator for two years. Mr. Hayes farmed in Martin and Murray counties in Minnesota before moving to Danbury in 1937 where the couple resided on a farm until 1944. He resided in Danbury from 1944 until his death.
Mr. Hayes was a member of the Methodist church at Danbury.
Survivors include the widow; six daughters, Mrs. Robert Warwick of Marietta, Minn., Mrs. Richard Posonske of Worthington, Minn., Mrs. Martin Calkins of Iowa Falls, Ia., Mrs. Vernon Fischel of Bethel, Mo., Mrs. Roger Harvey of Sibley and Mrs. Richard Rightmire of Danbury; two sons, Delbert of Danbury and Edgar of Morrow Bay, Cal.; a brother, Charles of Kidder, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Leggett of Port Arthur, Tex., and Pansy of Galveston, Tex.; 32 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
