Ben's father died in 1900, following a boiler explosion at the family cotton gin. Ben was 18 years old and it fell to him to help provide for his mother and younger family members.
Ben married Evelyn Rebecca "Eva" Taylor, daughter of William D. and Ella Taylor, on October 6, 1915 in Snyder, Kiowa County, Oklahoma. They were the parents of three children: (1) Ruth Evelyn Adkins Whitley, 1922-2002, (2) Bennett Franklin "Ben Frank" Adkins, Jr., 1925-2011, (3) Jack Alvin Adkins, 1932-2008.
Ben was also the father of another daughter, Reba Adkins. According to her birth certificate and adoption records, Reba Adkins was the natural daughter of Ben Adkins (a merchant living in Madill, Marshall County, Oklahoma) and Susan Francis Davis (a nurse living in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas). Reba Adkins was adopted by Bomar and Ella Wright and her name was changed to Juanita Faye "Davey" Wright.
Ben farmed until his early adult years, then owned a grocery store in Madill OK, then later a Dry Goods store that became a General Merchandise store. When the depression came in 1929, he moved his family to a farm near Lindsay, OK. later moving to western Oklahoma, near Snyder in Kiowa County.
Ben died from a cerebral hemorrhage on May 11, 1960 at Oklahoma City's University Hospital, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was buried in Fairlawn Cemetery, at Snyder, Kiowa County, Oklahoma.
