He was born Jan. 13, 1890, at Burwell, Neb., and moved to Chelan with his family in a covered wagon in 1903. The family homesteaded in the Boyd District where Mr. Carpenter attended school. He later was employed on wheat ranches in the Waterville area.
On June 6, 1917, Mr. Carpenter married Mary Peterson at Farmer. They made their home in Azwell where they owned and operated a grocery store and post office. Following their retirement in 1959, they moved to Chelan.
He was a member of the Chelan Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, at home; three sons, Les and Virgil, both of Chelan, and Milton of Modesto, Calif.; two daughters, Eleanor Harris of Chelan and Helen White of Spokane; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and three grandchildren.
