Staff Sergeant Howard Dennis Courtney, U.S. Army (RET), age 70, of Madison, Indiana, entered this life on September 22, 1951 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the loving son of the late Tony E. and Bernice Jean Gray Courtney. Dennis was raised in Jefferson County and was a 1970 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School. He was blessed with one son, Scott. Dennis was inducted into the United States Army on April 22, 1974 in Louisville, Kentucky. He served for 21 years and rose to the rate of Staff Sergeant. During service, he was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, Joint Service Achievement Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Nation Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Retirement Lapel. Dennis was honorably discharged on June 1, 1994 in Fort Polk, Louisiana. After his career in the Army, Dennis went to work for Miller Lite Distribution Company in Hammond, Louisiana for 20 years. On June 22, 2017, Dennis was united in marriage to Vickie Lynn Elder in Madison, Indiana. Dennis and Vickie Lynn enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel camper, especially to the mountains or the beach where they wintered. He was a member of the Major Samuel Woodfill Post # 9 of the American Legion. Dennis was also of the Christian faith and attended Liberty Christian Church, where he was baptized. Dennis was a devoted husband, loving dad, and papaw. Dennis died on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at 10:58 p.m. at the Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

A LOVING FAMILY
Dennis will be missed by his loving wife of five years, Vickie Lynn Elder Courtney of Madison, Indiana; his son, Scott Courtney and his wife Bethann of Madison, Indiana; his step son, Anthony Lauderbaugh (Haley) of Carrollton, Kentucky; his step daughter, Jaime Dean (Mike) of Madison, Indiana; his grandchildren, Camrun Courtney, Christian Courtney, Nathan Bennett, and Alexis Wright; his great grandchildren, Easton Wright, Everly Wright, Eli Wright, and Ava Bennett; his step grandchildren, Courtney, Rolin, Zachary, and Jackson; his sister, Carol Munson and her husband Steve of Madison, Indiana; his brothers, Tony Courtney and his wife Rita of Milton, Kentucky and Donnie Courtney and his wife Tammy of Madison, Indiana; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Tony E. Courtney, died April 15, 1999, his mother, Bernice Jean Gray Courtney, died April 16, 2019, his sister, Anna Jean "Jeanie" Garroit, died March 29, 2001, his sister, Glenda Sue "Susie" Herrell, died June 25, 1977, and his brother, Jimmy Courtney, died September 8, 2013.

FUNERAL CEREMONY
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., by at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery,1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana

VISITATION
Friends may visit Monday from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 am until the time of service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.

MILITARY HONORS
A final salute with military honors will be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion.
