Glenda Sue "Susie" Courtney Herrell, 52, of Madison, died Monday, June 25, 2007, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

She was born April 23, 1955, in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of Tony E. and Bernice Gray Courtney. She was a 1973 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School. She was united in marriage to Ralph O'Neil Smith. She was a former certified nursing assistant for King's Daughters' Hospital, The Waters of Clifty Falls, Hanover Nursing Center, Madison Nursing Home and Clark Memorial Hospital. She was united in marriage Jan. 5, 1990, to Joseph Bay "Skip" Herrell II. While living in Virginia she was a clerk for Burger King, and after moving back to Madison in 1996 she worked for the Madison Wal-Mart. She enjoyed the computer, crocheting, needlepoint and collecting dolls.

She is survived by four daughters, Rhonda "Ron" Edwards of Madison, Candace Eldridge of Fort Benning, Ga., Kimberly Herrell-Stone of Hanover and Brandi Herrell of Alaska; one son, Ralph O'Neal Smith Jr. of Hanover; her mother, of Madison; one sister, Carol Munson of Madison; four brothers, Tony Courtney of Bedford, Ky., Dennis Courtney of Springfield, La., Donnie Courtney of Ozark, Ala., and Jim Courtney of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Bay "Skip" Herrell II; her father, who died April 15, 1999; one sister, Anna Jean "Jeanie" Garriott, who died March 29, 2001; and her grandparents, Ernest Howard and Hattie Hulett Courtney, and James and Flossie Gray.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. Thursday until the service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
