Ottumwa Courier March 5, 1940

Elam C. Hopwood, 77 died at his home on Ottumwa Route 6, 4 1/2 mile south of the city at 9:30 AM today. Mr. Hopwood was born in Wapello County and lived here all his life. He was an employee of the Ottumwa Railway and Light Company and later the Iowa Southern utilities company for 35 years. He retired in 1941. Surviving are his wife, Polly, two sons, Clarence of Ottumwa Route 6 and Cloyd of Blakesburg route 2, four daughters, Mrs. Susie Fleener, Mrs. Florence Updike, Mrs. Lavina Monohan and Mrs. Frances Pettit, all of Ottumwa he was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy. He was a member of the Fairview Christian Church, southwest of Ottumwa. The body is at the Johnson funeral Chapel awaiting completion of funeral arrangements. Funeral services for Elam C. Hopwood retired bus driver, who died at his home on Ottumwa Route 6 at 9:30 AM Tuesday, will be at the Johnson funeral Chapel at 1:30 PM Friday. Conducted by the Rev. Charles A. Albin of the Church of the Brother. Burial will be in the Ormanville cemetery, and local bus drivers will serve as pallbearers.
