May Belle Wiggins was born January 1895 in Alabama to Thomas Lewis Daniel (1868-1936) and Amanda Elizabeth Daniel née Wiggins (1865-1899). After the death of her mother in 1899, May Belle and her siblings went to live with – and were adopted by – their grandparents, Martin Van Buren Wiggins (1837-1915) and Sarah Tommie Wiggins née Henderson (1844-1922). According to cousin Claudia Nipp: "Grandma wouldn't even let the kids call Lewis 'daddy'." (from a letter written by Claudia Nipp to Rachel Drummond née Wiggins)

Some time around 1910, May Belle Wiggins – along with her siblings, grandparents, Uncle John Cleveland Wiggins and his family – moved to Bell County, Texas. They are all shown on the 1910 US Census in Bell County. By 1917, the family had moved to Pushmataha County, OK. They remained in the area around Antlers and the neighboring town of Hugo – reconnecting with their father, Thomas Lewis Daniel.

It was while living in the Antlers area that May Belle married her husband, Will Burton.

Family story of May Belle's death:
When she died, May Belle was supposedly outdoors next to a fence, holding a baby. She called someone by name, threw them the baby over the fence, and May Belle fell dead. The family always suspected her husband, Will Burton, of fatally injuring her. They claimed he was mean to her.

May Belle Burton née Wiggins was buried in Ethel Cemetery, next to her infant nephews Finis Aubrey Wiggins (Aug-Sept 1919) and Lewis Monroe Wiggins (born/died Sept. 10, 1920) – both sons of John Monroe Wiggins (1891-1971) and his wife Hagar Edward Wiggins née Peel (1891-1951). May Belle's grave is marked only by a rock.

Ethel Cemetery is a family-owned cemetery located about two miles SE of Antlers, OK. For more information see https://www.okcemeteries.net/push/ethel/ethel.htm.
