LEWIS ADREN WHITCOMB is a family mystery. He went to California in search of gold (after 1860) and was never heard from again. Per a letter dated 9/18/1960, from Jesse Harold Whitcomb (FAG 39503144) to his niece, Mabel Irene Whitcomb Liebst (FAG 105647666), "Lewis wrote home that he had struck it rich and would soon be coming home. He never made it and was presumed killed for the gold."

PLACE OF BIRTH: determined via his son's death certificate- See Jesse Lewis Whitcomb (FAG 42839136). Birth location in NY State could be either Steuben or Greene (town of Windham) County. From New York, Lewis' travels took him to Indiana, Iowa, and California.

YEAR OF BIRTH: The 1860 Jennings County, Indiana census implies a DOB as 1814, whereas the 1850 census reflects Lewis' age as 34 and an implied DOB as 1816. Sources conflict on his DOB; An estimate is between 1808-1816.

OCC: Lewis Adren is listed as a stone mason, age 46 per the 1860 census, Spencer Township, Jennings County, Indiana. In the 1850 census of the same townhip/county, Lewis is a farmer, age 34.

MARRIED: Mary Goltry- age 43 per 1860 census, Spencer Township, Jennings County, Indiana and https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/. Per the 1850 census, Mary's age is listed as 33 years. Mary is not listed on the Sep. 1839 marriage license in Jennings County, Indiana.

Lewis bought land in Jennings County, Indiana, in 1837, 1839, 1841 and 1852, but by 1870, he had moved to Iowa.
