Per a letter dated 9/18/1960, from Jesse Harold Whitcomb (FAG 39503144) to his niece, Mabel Irene Whitcomb Liebst (FAG 105647666), "Lewis wrote home that he had struck it rich and would soon be coming home. He never made it and was presumed killed for the gold."
PLACE OF BIRTH: determined via his son's death certificate- See Jesse Lewis Whitcomb (FAG 42839136). Birth location in NY State could be either Steuben or Greene (town of Windham) County. From New York, Lewis' travels took him to Indiana, Iowa, and California.
YEAR OF BIRTH: The 1860 Jennings County, Indiana census implies a DOB as 1814, whereas the 1850 census reflects Lewis' age as 34 and an implied DOB as 1816. Sources conflict on his DOB; An estimate is between 1808-1816.
