Che was survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Esther Martínez; their children: José E. Martinez Jr.(Canisha), Everett Martinez (wife Eliza), Geraldine Ortiz (husband Lawrence), and Daniel Martinez; grandchildren: Ayesha Martinez (Kenny), Patricia Martinez (Matthew), Martín Martinez (Genesis), Jeremiah Martinez, Joseph Martinez and Caleb Ortiz; and great-grandchildren: Kylie, Kayden and Kamerynn Trujillo; brothers: Tony Martinez (wife Mary), Frutoso Martinez (wife Bernice), Belamino Martinez (wife Lita); sisters-in-law: Connie Martinez, Ellena Martinez (husband Leon) and Debbie Salazar; brothers-in-law: Johnny Salazar (wife Josefina), Fernándo Salazar, Gerald Salazar (wife Eunice); only surviving aunt Benny Gonzáles of Dixon; godchildren whom he never forgot: Leo Maestas, Stephanie Martinez, Steven Padilla, Danielle Martinez and Adam Martinez; as well as many other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends from both the Martinez and Padilla families whom he loved very much.

José was the youngest of seven children. Che married the love of his life, Esther, on 21 February 1971. They were blessed with four beautiful children: Joey, Everett, Daniel and Geraldine. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his greatest treasure. Che cherished the moments when he had them all together under one roof. Che loved to joke and have fun with everyone around, making nicknames for family and friends such as Cuppie, Gampi, Tweela, Plungy, Cherry, Birdie, Bob and Sweeper to name a few. He enjoyed listening to music, especially the oldies and Spanish; dancing, and playing the saxophone with his family and friends, going to the casino and always being by Esther's side. Che was a tough, but gentle man, who never gave up, always found a way. Che will forever and always be loved, remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
In his passing,

Pallbearers: Martín, Jeramiah, Joseph, Caleb and Kayden.
