Mrs. Ann Wood.

Mariam Ann Wood was born August 27, 1843 in Athens county, Ohio, and died at the home of her son near Good Hope, Oct. 30, 1913, aged 70 years and 2 months.

The [sic] was one of a family of eleven children born to George and Mary Conkey and came with the parents across the unsettled county, when but three years of age, making their way across the unbroken wilderness in a covered wagon, enduring the privations that came to all early settlers and from whose first privations our country has grown to the civilizations which we enjoy.

They settled in Hancock county, Illinois, where most of her life has been spent. She made her home at Fountain Green for fifteen years and the last six years at La Harpe.

Thus one by one the pioneers are passing and soon we will have them only as a memory. A sweet memory this one who lived her quiet life among us leaves, patient and uncomplaining during her illness which was caused by anemia and extended over a year.

About four months ago she went to Sciota to visit her son and grandson and was soon taken so much worse that she became bedfast and all that loving care and medical aid could do was of no avail.

She was married to Marion Lathrope and to this union three children were born, Alonzo, Cyrus and May. All have preceded her in death, May dying when she was five years old, the boys after reaching manhood.

She was again married to William Wood and to this union one son, Marion, was born[.] Besides she raised and cared for with a mother's love her grandson, Clarence, who now mourns her as the only mother he knew.

She leaves two brothers, Alfred and William, two sisters, Eliza and Ollie, nine grand-children [sic] and two great-grand-children [sic].

She was modest, good and true, and will be missed by her family and a large circle of friends and relatives in and around La Harpe where she had lately made her home.

During the meetings conducted by Rev. Ades at Eagle, she became obedient unto the faith and identified herself with the Church of Christ[.]

The funeral was held at the home of her brother, Wm. Conkey, south of La Harpe, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Elder E. A. Jordan officiating. Burial in the Alton graveyard.
