James helped organize the Smith Grove Baptist Church in Bond Co, IL in 1822.
James is recognized by the DAR as having been a Private in the VA militia during the Revolutionary War. Both James and Priscilla's graves in Smith Grove Cemetery were unmarked until 1927 when the Benjamin Mills Chapter of the IL DAR placed a marker on James' grave.
James died in Bond Co, IL in July 1828. He died intestate. After an estate sale the balance of his inventory was $163.
