He was a big businessman. He gave each of his sons land, stock, servants, cash and built each one a home. He also built the suspension bridge in Nashville. In his prime he was worth over a million dollars, which is very wealthy for the time. He was a compassionate master to his hundred servants.
James married his little cousin Emeline and Sam Houston was the best man at the wedding married March 21, 1821.

He spent four years building plantations mansions, Ravenwood, Oak Hall for his son Samuel and Inglehame for James III.
He received his wealth by buying land and growing cotton also bought land in LA and MS growing more cotton. He started a Steamship Line on the Mississippi to move cotton to New Orleans. In 1840's started a Turnpike on A13 mile dirt road from Sheed Road to Arrington. In 1850's started a railroad line from Nashville to the Alabama State Line Called the Tennessee-Alabama Line. He was one of the wealthiest men in the state by 1850.
They lost 5 children in 5 years
Most of his fortune was gone by the end of the War.
Died at the Oak Hall mansion and buried in the family cemetery.
