JOHN MCCLELLAN was the son of HANNAH HOGUE/HOGE and WILLIAM MCCLELLAN, both of PA.

NOTE: Death date discrepancy between the date on the headstone shown in the photo and the date of 1907 is unexplained as of this writing.

He moved with his parents to Athens Co, Ohio and during the Civil War they moved again, to Doniphan Co, KS. There JOHN farmed close to his parents, and may have cut a deal similar to his father's for payment for railroad access through his property.

At some point he moved from Doniphan Co, KS. Family history says he moved to Oklahoma. His brother JAMES KNOX POLK MCCLELLAN and his wife MARY DEVEREANY are said to have done the same. Under terms of JOHN'S father's will all the MCCLELLAN children received $300 cash payments out of his estate, plus other monies as real property was liquidated. It's possible JOHN and his brother JAMES used this inheritance to move to OK.

Married: FANNIE RUTTER.

Their known children:

1) Eliza McClellan (1850-1924)
Husband: Francis Marion Culp

2) Charlotte McClellan (1852-1927)
Husband 1: Henry Culp
Husband 2: John P. Jones

3) Mary Jane McClellan (1854-?)

4) Isaac McClellan (1856-?)

5) Hannah Alpharetta "Retty" McClellan (1858-1905)
Husband: Unknown Roberts

6) Arthur Henry McClellan (1858-1929)
Wife: Mary Huss

7) Amanda McClellan (1861-?)

8) Leona McClellan (1863-?)

9) James W. McClellan (1865-1897)
Wife: Margaret Donham

In approximately May of 1872 their farmhouse was destroyed by a tornado. JOHN was reportedly out in one of his fields while FANNIE was visiting her father-in-law, WILLIAM MCCLELLAND. No one was hurt but some of the large stones used in the house's foundation were hurled some distance away. A neighbor's home was hit and his wife was killed.

According to the records of the OK Tombstone Transcription Project this was an unmarked grave when Elmwood cemetery was walked by DEBORAH BUSSEY CAPLES, date unknown. This cemetery is managed by the city of Wagoner, OK and burial records are kept at City Hall, but the old Territorial section records reportedly have no dates or grave numbers. Wagoner County was created from Cherokee lands on 16 July 1907. There is no firm date for when death records began to be recorded at the county level.

The 2 headstones in the photos on this page seem recent compared to the appearance of the plot itself. Next to JOHN'S marker is now a matching one for ALPHARTETTA "RETTY" MCCLELLAN ROBERTS. There is no burial record listing for JOHN'S date of death and no listing at all for ALPHARETTA MCCLELLAN ROBERTS.
