From the Bray Family papers: Born 11 Jan abt. 1835 to HANAH HOGE/HOGUE and WILLIAM MCCLELLAND of Greene Co., PA. In 1839, when she was 4, she moved with her parents to Athens Co., OH "where she grew up, enjoying her childhood with loving parents." It was to be a large family; ELIZABETH eventually had 9 or 10 siblings.

"Elizabeth married at age 19 on *9, April 1854, at the home of the bride's parents at Trimble, Athens Co., Ohio. The ceremony was performed by the Most Rev. Alpheus Bray, brother of the Groom. Nelson Luke BRAY, son of Richard Bowlby BRAY and Ann TINDALL, was born 8 Oct. 1832 at Mansfield, Warren Co., NJ."

*NOTE: Ohio Marriage Records use 7 April. Recto page of 1854, line 9, only other marriage recorded on the 7th. is that of Joe Witham and Maria Tomkinson (sp?).

"Nelson was a carpenter by trade but did farm labor to make ends meet the first years of their marriage."

Their known children:

1) William Orrin Bray b. 19 May 1855 at the home of the maternal grandparents at Trimble, Athens Co., OH. (ELIZABETH age 20). He was her only child to ever marry and he deserted his wife and 4 daughters after 11 yrs. of marriage, disappearing from records.

(2) Richard Asbury Bray b. 15 May 1858 at Trimble, OH. d. 5 Sept 1867 at Marion, KS. (ELIZABETH age 23)

(3) Charles Addison Bray b. 30 March 1862 at Marion, Doniphan Co., KS. (ELIZABETH age 27)

(4) Thomas Jefferson Bray b. 11 Oct 1865 at Marion, Doniphan Co., KS. (ELIZABETH age 30)

(5) Arthur Vernon Bray b. 17 April 1873 at Marion, Doniphan Co., KS. (ELIZABETH age 38)

In 1858 ELIZABETH and NELSON moved to Marion in Doniphan Co., KS. Her parents, HANNAH and WILLIAM MCCLELLAND moved to Doniphan Co. during the Civil War, as did her brothers WILLIAM HENRY, THOMAS J. and JOHN MCCLELLAN plus at least two of her sisters, LAVINA MCCLELLAN SARVER and NANCY ANN MCCLELLAN.

On 5 Sept 1867 ELIZABETH and NELSON'S second son, 9 year old RICHARD, died from scarlet fever, which the rest of the family had survived.

"Work for a carpenter was not enough to make ends meet so Nelson did more farming and farm labor for others." Youngest son ARTHUR was born six years after the death of RICHARD.

NELSON LUKE BRAY was killed in a threshing accident just three years later, on 17 Aug 1876 at Palermo, Doniphan Co., KS. ELIZABETH BRAY never remarried, but struggled for some years to keep her farm going next to that of her younger brother WILLIAM HENRY MCCLELLAN and his wife MARTHA JANE (CURTIS).

It was probably a benefit for both families; in 1881 WILLIAM'S wife, MARTHA JANE CURTIS MCCLELLAN, died, leaving WILLIAM with six young children. It seems highly likely that ELIZABETH'S maternal influence was that most readily remembered by her MCCLELLAN nieces and nephews, and WILLIAM'S paternal influence recalled by ELIZABETH'S sons.

For 12 years after NELSON'S death ELIZABETH struggled to hold onto the farm as her boys grew up. On 4 Sept 1888 the Osborne County Farmer, on page 3, listed the farm as being up for sale for non-payment of 1887 taxes. The property was redeemable by 1891 if taxes paid. It seems ELIZABETH found a way to pay those taxes, but 3 yrs. later her brother WILLIAM and his 6 children and brother THOMAS, his family, and her sister LAVINA SARVER and her family had all left for Thurston County, Washington.

In their absence she lost the farm for default on her mortgage. The final notice ran in the Osborne County Farmer Newspaper Page 4; Delinquent Tax List. As it was a Notice to Non-resident Defendants, it suggests ELIZABETH and her boys, by then young men in their twenties, had already moved by then to Colorado. Why they chose Colorado when she had siblings still in KS and the ones in WA were thriving is unknown.

Oldest son WILLIAM ORRIN BRAY was the only child of ELIZABETH and NELSON to have children. He and his wife AMANDA (MANDY) MELVINA HOWARD had four daughters, ADELIA (ADA) MAY, CHLOE ALMIRA, FLORENCE MARY, and EDNA ELIZABETH BRAY. WILLIAM and AMANDA eventually settled in the Arapahoe Co. Colorado area where ELIZABETH and her other sons joined them. After having raised sons, ELIZABETH delighted in having granddaughters and was close to them.
