Mary Sophia (Headrick) Hintergardt, 97, passed away on March 8, 2022, in Guymon, Oklahoma. She was born April 6, 1924, near Adams, Oklahoma, the daughter of George and Maryanna (Hensley) Headrick.
Mary graduated from Adams High School in 1941, where she loved playing on the basketball team. She married Truman Hintergardt on July 24, 1943, in Liberal, Kansas, and they settled in Guymon. Mary had many interests and took courses in Children's Development and Reading, and Real Estate at Panhandle State University. She also took classes in First Aide and Home Care offered by Memorial Hospital.
Mary was a career-woman, and she served as a bookkeeper and cashier for several retail stores, including Ideal Bakery, Ideal Food Stores, Western Novelty, and Longbothom Wholesale. She also worked as a teleoperator, cashier and customer service representative at GTE.
Mary served as a regent for the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a member for years. She was a Girl Scout Leader and camp counselor, and she was also a Cub Scout Leader. Mary also served as an American Red Cross Junior First Aide Instructor. Mary loved working with children, and she enjoyed teaching the 3-4 year old Sunday school class at the United Methodist Church. She received a Gold Cross Award and Lifetime Membership for her commitment to and contributions for the United Methodist Women. She served as chairman for the community Thanksgiving Dinner meal, and she was the Guymon Hospital Auxiliary member and President for two years.
Despite her many accomplishments and community contributions, Mary reported that the only truly important thing she accomplished was being a mom to her four wonderful kids: Trulena, Michael, Fred, and Rhonda. She was blessed to become a grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. As a grandmother, Mary enjoyed showing her grandchildren how to properly shoot a basketball.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Truman; her parents, George and Maryanna Headrick; two sisters: Georgia Hill Williams and Myrtle Pettijohn; seven brothers: Jacob, Melbourne, Donald, Warren, Harlin, Ronald and Ivan Headrick; brother-in-law, Donald Hintergardt and wife, Esther; and sisters-in-law: Patsy, Louise, Mable, Roberta and Alice Headrick.
