Owen Read Burgess - 1922-2015
BURGESS, Owen Read Owen Read Burgess was born in Riverdale, Utah on December 9, 1922 to Willard Burgess and Mary Adeline Read Burgess. He grew up in the Odgen, Utah area with his brother, Eldon and sister, Marva, both now deceased. In 1941 he went to work for Hill Field AFB at Layton, UT, doing sheet metal work. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and trained as a B-24 navigator, eventually becoming an instructor himself and held the rank of 2nd Lt. He received orders to go overseas but the war ended prior to his departure; he was discharged in 1945. He returned to work at Hill Field AFB retiring from there in 1978, having held numerous different job titles, the last one being logistics management specialist. He had many other part time jobs both before and after retirement, and enjoyed working. Owen married Lois Pass in 1946. They had five children. In 1978 they moved to Mead, WA. Lois passed away in 1980. Owen married Sherry Hurnelt in 1982. They adopted three children. Owen enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, carpentry, camping and later RVing. He could and did repair almost anything. In 2014 he and Sherry moved to Spokane. Owen passed away peacefully December 12, 2015. One son, Raymond, and one grandson, Peter, predeceased him. He is survived by his family whom he loved very deeply: his wife Sherry, sons Allen (Beverly), Lynn (Cindy), Corey (Carla), and Keven; daughters Lisa (Marshall), Teresa, and Ann, and daughter-in-law Jo Ann; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service January 9, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9706 N. Division St., Spokane.
