Abigail, daughter of John and Hester Bortz, was born in the state of Pennsylvania, January 7, 1822, and died in Wells Co., Indiana, January 22, 1895, aged 73 years and 15 days.

In childhood she removed with her father's family to Holmes Co., Ohio, where while in the seventeenth year of her age she united with the Lutheran church in church fellowship. She was united in marriage with Cyrus Shadle, August 18, 1840; to this union seven children were given, four sons and three daughters. Two daughters the eldest and the youngest of the family of children, preceded the parents to that bourne from whence no traveler returns. Five children, the four sons and one daughter, say, "Farewell Mother". In the autumn of the year 1849, she removed with her family from Holmes Co., to Wells Co., Indiana, thereby partaking of the hardships of pioneer life. In the autumn of the year 1858, herself and husband united with the Methodist Episcopal church. July 15, in the year 1878, death again invaded the home circle, claiming the companion of her youth. February 15, 1885, she changed her church relationship from the Methodist Episcopal to the Wesleyan Methodist church. Her last sickness was severe, continuing four weeks.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Orvil of the United Brethren church. Scriptural lesson, the ninetieth Psalm; hymn, "Why Should our Tears of Sorrow Flow?" Text, the twelfth verse of the ninetieth psalm.
James B. Shadle.
