SLAIN BUSINESSMAN CALLED 'VERY CARING' - SCOTTSBURG MAN FATALLY SHOT AT RENTAL PROPERTY
The shooting death in Lexington of a "self-made" Scottsburg businessman Wednesday was especially shocking to his longtime secretary. "He was a very caring person." Donna Hackman said of the death of James L. Arbuckle, 67, her boss of 16 years. "He was an astute businessman who gave 100 percent." Arbuckle, who was from Lexington, had amassed a wide array of businesses and properties throughout Southern Indiana. He was owner of Arbuckle Chevy Olds Buick Pontiac GMC & GEO Dealership, Arbuckle Electric, Arbuckle Apartments and 56 Supply in Scottsburg, as well as owner of numerous farms and rental properties in Madison, Lexington, Seymour and Columbus, Hackman said. "He worked hard." She said yesterday. "He was a self-made man." Arbuckle's life ended tragically shortly before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when he was shot to death in one of his rental properties in Lexington, said Sgt. Marvin Jenkins of the Indiana State Police's Sellersburg post. According to Jenkins, Arbuckle arrived at 9613 Arbuckle Road and had a "confrontation" with Sheryl Ann Lowe, 30, who rented the home from Arbuckle and also works at Arbuckle's dealership in Scottsburg. There was a shooting and Mr. Arbuckle was killed." Jenkins said. "At this time there is no indication of anyone else being at the scene. After the shooting, Lowe called 911 and reported the incident." No charges had been filed as of late yesterday. Jefferson County Deputy Coroner David Ommen said in a news release that Arbuckle was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 5 p.m. A .22-caliber rifle was found at the home. Medical examiner Amy Burrows of the Kentucky State Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville, declined to say how many times Arbuckle was shot but confirmed it was several. Jenkins said police finding will be turned over to Jefferson County Prosecutor Nancy Jacobs. Arbuckle's survivors include his wife, the former Doris E. Hall; sons Ray, Jay and Clay Arbuckle; daughters Rita Dillon, Lana Thompson and Lacinda Richey; a brother, Larry Arbuckle; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. tomorrow at First Christian Church, 255 W. McClain Ave. Scottsburg, with entombment in New Bethel Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation will be at Stewart Funeral Home, 80 N. First St., Scottsburg, from 3 to 8 p.m. today and at the church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
