James settled and bought land in Clark County Indiana, 1808; his military commission now of Dr. Phillips Work, Denver Colorado appointing him Captain. In the First Battalion of the first Regiment of Jefferson County Indiana, was dated February 4 1811 and signed at Vincennes by William Henry Harrison. Governor of Indiana Territory. A land patent was issued to James Arbuckle June 16 1812 and was signed by James Madison. That part of Clark County Indiana became Jefferson County Indiana in 1810.
